Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Haru Cooperative Double Washed

Yirgacheffe coffees continue to be associated with exceptionally clean profiles exhibiting floral aromas. Yirgacheffe roughly translates to “water town” so it’s fitting that the region became famous as one of the first places where fully washed coffees were produced.

This Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Haru Cooperative Double Washed coffee is sourced from family owned farms organized around the Haru Cooperative located within the coffee region of Yirgacheffe in the Gedeo Zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, Ethiopia.

This coffee was produced by the Haru Cooperative, part of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union, sourced from family owned farms organized around the Haru Cooperative.

Yirgacheffe, the specific town where Haru is located, is often used to describe entire Gedeo region. Gedeo- is named after the Gedeo people who are indigenous to this area. The Gedeo Zone and is bordered East, South and West by the Oromia Region and on the North by Yirgacheffe.

Like many cooperative coffees from Ethiopia, the washing station employs a secondary underwater soak after fermentation, sometimes referred to as “double washing.” Not only does this help remove any leftover pulp on the seeds, it also triggers the seed to begin germinating and it’s speculated this can improve the flavor! Like many high quality washed coffees from Ethiopia, this coffee is dense, dry, and small in size. But above all, this is a very dry coffee. At around 8% moisture.

Look for lots of jasmine/floral and lemonade citrus flavors. Sweet peach notes, hints of cantaloupe, clean and bright. Go for a fast high heat roast to bring up the wonderful sparkle of this one. This is an excellent summertime coffee!

The Haru Cooperative currently has 1,187 members. In 2002, the cooperative joined the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), an umbrella organization established 2002 to support a sustainable coffee supply from cooperatives in the Gedeo ethnic region of Ethiopia. There are twenty-six other cooperatives affiliated with the YCFCU totaling more than 45,000 members.
